About Name Change Atlas

Name Change Atlas is a free, independent reference for legally changing your name in the United States. We cover all 50 states and the District of Columbia, plus the federal steps everyone shares — Social Security, passport, and the IRS.

What we do

We do one thing well: turn a confusing bureaucratic task into a clear, verified plan. For every state we publish the filing fee, the court that handles name changes, the publication rule, the official forms, and the ordered steps. Three free tools — a cost calculator, a who-to-notify checklist, and a timeline generator — build a plan personalized to your state and situation. There is no signup, no email gate, and no fee.

What we don't do

We are not attorneys and we do not give legal advice, and we don't file anything on your behalf or sell a form-filling service. We link you to the official government forms and the official sources so you can do it yourself — for just the government fees. If your situation is unusual or contested, a licensed attorney in your state is the right help.

How we stay accurate

Every fact traces to an official source — a state judiciary page, a county court fee schedule, or a federal .gov page. We show a Last verified date on every data-driven page, and where a fee genuinely varies by county or we're re-confirming it, we say so instead of guessing. Right now 33 of 51 states are fully verified; the rest are marked as being re-confirmed. Read our methodology for the full process, and the master source list for the primary references.

Name Change Atlas is published by Billy Reiner Inc.. Pages are written and reviewed by the Name Change Atlas Editorial Team — the researchers who verify each state against its official issuing authority before it goes live. We publish under a team byline rather than a single name because accuracy here comes from checking every fact against a primary source, not from any one person's opinion, and we don't claim to be attorneys.
